The 5-2-1-0 Plan for a Healthier Active Lifestyle

If you haven’t seen this message yet, you will as this campaign to help fight childhood obesity is spreading throughout Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties through pediatricians, schools, child care centers, WIC, and many other organizations under the Healthy Lee (formerly Fit Friendly) community umbrella.  In March 2012 Lee County Health Department and Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida were selected along with 40 communities nationwide to participate in the Healthy Weight Collaborative to help further develop a community action plan promoting a healthy lifestyle.Family Health Center pediatricians and WIC nutritionists are now offering a “Prescription for a Healthier, Active Life” to their families modeled after the one chosen by the American Academy of Pediatrics to encourage these four basic components:

  • Eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day.
  • Limit screen time to 2 hours or less per day.
  • Get 1 hour or more of physical activity every day.
  • Drink fewer or 0 sugar-sweetened drinks

In October WIC began using a short Powerpoint presentation, the prescription and related handouts (available below) and clients have been very responsive to the information.  The message is simple and most people can relate to one or all of the areas.  A healthy community requires collaboration and hard work from all sectors to improve health outcomes. We continue to actively encourage input from the public and private sectors.  If you are interested in promoting this message or using any of the materials already developed, please call 239-332-9510.
