The 5-2-1-0 Plan for a Healthier Active Lifestyle
5-2-1-0 is a campaign to help fight childhood obesity that continues to spread throughout Lee County. Pediatricians, schools, childcare centers, WIC, and many other organizations have used this standardized message. In March 2012 the Department of Health in Lee County and Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida were selected along with 40 communities nationwide to participate in the Healthy Weight Collaborative to help further develop a community action plan promoting a healthy lifestyle. Organizations have offered the “Prescription for a Healthier, Active Life” to families modeled after the one chosen by the American Academy of Pediatrics to encourage these four basic components:
- Eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day.
- Limit screen time to 2 hours or less per day.
- Get 1 hour or more of physical activity every day.
- Drink fewer or zero sugar-sweetened drinks
The WIC program has provided a short PowerPoint presentation, the prescription template and related handouts (available below). Clients have been very responsive to this information. The message is simple, and most people can relate to one, or even all, of the areas. A healthy community requires collaboration and hard work from all sectors to improve health outcomes. We continue to actively encourage input from the public and private sectors. If you are interested in promoting this message or using any of the materials already developed, please call 239-332-9510.
