Tattooing is defined as a mark or design made on or under the skin using ink, dyes, or pigments.
Tattooing can be separated into two broad forms:
- Conventional (traditional).
- Cosmetic (including permanent makeup, micropigmentation, microblading, and micro needling using ink, dye, or pigment).
In Florida, all forms of tattooing require a license. The license is issued by the county where the tattoo shop is located or where the artist lives, even if they work in a different county. Make sure your business or home is located in Lee County before submitting your forms.
A DOH-Lee inspector will complete an inspection of the business before it opens. After the initial inspection, they will make yearly unannounced inspections, or as needed.
There are specific rules that tattoo shops and artists are required to follow to protect public health. Protection measures should be taken to prevent infections and disease transmission.
