Fort Myers, Fla. – The Lee County School District has been recognized as a Healthy School District by Florida’s Heathiest Weight Initiative and has earned the Gold Certification Award Level. The Healthy School District Award was established by the Coordinated School Health Partnership to support districts establishing a culture and climate in which students and staff can reach their full potential.

Additionally, 11 Lee County schools have earned the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) recognition. The HealthierUS School Challenge is a voluntary certification initiative that recognizes schools who go above and beyond in their efforts to promote nutritious meals, physical activity, and nutrition education. Schools that become certified will maintain certification for four years and may reapply once their certification has expired.

A school's certification allows for both state and national recognition while earning cash rewards up to $2,000, and receiving a banner, plaque, and certificate to display within the school. Participation and completion of this initiative enhances the overall student learning experience throughout the school district. Schools are also recognized throughout the year on the United States Department of Agriculture website.

Schools seeking certification in one of the three levels (gold, silver, bronze) must meet or exceed basic criteria such as:

  • Participation in USDA School Meal Programs
  • Meal Service Information
  • Smarter Lunchroom Assessment
  • Nutrition Education
  • Physical Education
  • Physical Activity
  • School Wellness Policy
  • Other Criteria for Excellence
