WHO/WHAT: On Thursday, December 1, the Florida Department Health in Lee County, in partnership with AIDS Healthcare Foundation, McGregor Clinic, Walgreens, Metropolitan Community Church, and the Tice Methodist Church, will be hosting a Candlelight Vigil and Commemoration in observance of World AIDS Day 2016, with its local theme “Re-Think HIV, Play Your Part, Taking Responsibility.” Free HIV testing and other health screenings will be provided to all. Art work and handmade quilts with embroidered names of those who have fallen to the HIV/AIDS pandemic will be on display. The event will also feature educational materials and various community health programmatic resources. Family entertainment and refreshments will be provided. A mannequin challenge will be staged depicting the continuum of HIV/AIDS.

WHY: World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1st each year around the world. The 2016 national theme is “Leadership. Commitment. Impact.” World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and to address HIV/AIDS disparities, HIV related stigmas and blame while sparking dialogue towards stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS among all populations. The observance of World AIDS Day has become one of the most recognized health awareness days worldwide. It provides a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. Started in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day.
