Lee County, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Lee County (DOH-Lee) has no advisories about high bacteria levels at any public beaches. Tests completed today for Enterococcus bacteria in water samples taken Wednesday, October 7, 2015, and tests completed Tuesday for samples taken Monday, October 5, 2015 show safe levels for wading or swimming, as allowable at specific parks.

“Heavy and lengthy rainstorms this summer and early fall may have contributed to more beach advisory postings than some years,” said Charles Walther, Environmental Engineering manager for DOH-Lee. “We’re happy to report Enterococcus bacteria levels for all tested beaches are within the safe levels for fresh and salt water.”

Enterococcus bacteria normally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and animals. The presence of an elevated concentration of these bacteria is an indicator of pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff, pets, wildlife or sewage. For more information go to https://lee.floridahealth.gov.
