Health Officials Receive Perfect Lab Rating

LEE COUNTY— The highest rating for accuracy in laboratory testing was awarded to the Florida Department of Health in Lee County this month by the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Committee. The rating shows the public’s health and safety through drinking water and recreational water checks is being well protected by health officials.

The Environmental Engineering Department of DOH-Lee scored 100 percent on all performance tests in November 2014. It is the first time DOH-Lee has received a Certificate of Excellence for a perfect score on all bacteriological testing by NELAC. The department has received perfect scores for similar testing in the past.

DOH-Lee staff routinely runs tests to identify bacteria levels in potable water for utility systems and private drinking water wells, as well as recreational water at 13 beaches and public pools. Staff members Nelica Krekic and Zuleika Colon Vasquez are the laboratory technicians responsible for correctly analyzing drinking water and recreational water for bacterial growth.
